Hong Kong Buses Wiki

Chai Wan Kok (柴灣角) is located in Tsuen Wan District to the west of Tai Chung Road, between Tsuen Wan Town Centre and Tsuen Wan West, with industrial and commercial buildings in the southern part and residential buildings along Tsuen King Circuit in the northern part.

History[]

Before the reclamation of Tsuen Wan in the 1960s, Chai Wan Kok was a promontory in the northern part of Tsuen Wan Bay. Afterwards, the Government started to develop Tsuen Wan into a satellite city by reclaiming the bay, and the land was set aside for the Chai Wan Kok Industrial Area as an extension of the Tsuen Wan Industrial Area, while Sha Tsui Road and Chai Wan Kok Street were used as complementary roads for the industrial area. The Nan Fung Textiles Factory, CDW Factory and Hong Kong Central Textiles have contributed a lot to the textile and garment industry of Hong Kong.

At the junction of Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan and Chai Wan Kok Street, there is the Chai Wan Kok Street Public Toilet and the Chai Wan Kok Cooked Food Market, which was opened on 1 June 1980. The roundabout underneath the Tsuen Wan Road bridge opposite the cooked food market is the Chai Wan Kok Interchange, which connects the industrial area, Tsuen Wan West, Tsuen Wan Town Centre and urban Kowloon.

In the late 1970s, Hopewell and other developers started to develop residential areas on a large hillside behind the Chai Wan Kok industrial area, building private housing estates such as Allway Gardens and Tsuen Wan Centre. The bus terminus in Tsuen King Circuit was initially known as "West Chai Wan Kok"[1], but was renamed as "Tsuen Wan Gardens" in 1989.

The Tsuen King Circuit Flyover across Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan was opened to traffic on 28 July 2000.[2] It is an east-west two-way flyover connecting Tsuen King Circuit with the Chai Wan Kok Industrial Estate on Sha Tsui Road, providing an additional vehicular access to the densely populated Tsuen King Circuit residential area and relieving traffic congestion between the eastern end of Tsuen King Circuit and the Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan.

Route 5 (Chai Wan Kok section)[]

The Tsuen Wan District Council (TWDC) was consulted as early as March 1993 and the public was gazetted in April 1995 on the proposed road scheme for the remaining section of Route 5 between Shek Wai Kok and Chai Wan Kok. In addition, space was reserved for the road section during the planning of Discovery Park, and the developer, New World, and Hong Kong Resort also completed the 190-metre-long section of the reserved road section during the construction works. However, members of the Tang family strongly objected to the road scheme on the grounds that the works might affect the fung shui of the Tang's ancestral grave on the hillside at the junction of Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan and Tsuen King Circuit.

The scheme was revised in 1997 to include the addition of a footpath on top of part of a retaining wall near the Tang's ancestral grave, the conversion of a section of a footpath at the junction of Sha Tsui Road and Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan to a carriageway, and the widening and improvement of the 700-metre-long section of Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan from Tsuen Wan Police Station to Chai Wan Kok by converting it into a dual four-way road, as well as the improvement of Chai Wan Kok Interchange; that section of Cheung Pei Shan Road was eventually opened to traffic on 8 February 2007.[3]

Currently, the Cable TV Building and Tom Lee Music Service Department, as well as the recently completed One Midtown and TML Plaza, are located in the Chai Wan Kok Industrial Area.

Street/road structure[]

Chai Wan Kok is one of the sections of the Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan, with Tuen Mun Road and Cheung Pei Shan Road joining Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan on either side of Tsuen Tak Garden.

Tsuen King Circuit connects to the residential area of Chai Wan Kok West, while Sha Tsui Road and Tai Chung Road intersect the industrial area. In the 1990s, the Government constructed a flyover to connect the end of Tsuen King Circuit at Kam Fung Garden with Sha Tsui Road. After the commissioning of Tsuen King Circuit Flyover in the summer of 2000, the bus stop outside Tsuen Tak Gardens on Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan was renamed as "Tsuen King Circuit Flyover".
