Central (Macau Ferry) Bus Terminus (中環(港澳碼頭)巴士總站 [Remark 1][Remark 2], Citybus Location Code MAF, whereas KMB and LWB Location Code 港澳) is located next to the Macau Ferry Terminal and the Hong Kong Heliport of Shun Tak Centre and diagonally opposite to the Western Market in Sheung Wan [Remark 3] on Connaught Road West, Central and Western District, Hong Kong Island. The bus terminus adopts a traditional parallel single-row platform design and is surrounded on three sides by Chung Kong Road, Chung King Road and Connaught Road West.
The Macau Ferry Bus Terminus is one of the three major bus termini in the Central and Western District [Remark 4], with 24 regular franchised bus routes, which is the highest among all bus termini on Hong Kong Island. A number of Cross-Harbour Tunnel routes, Eastern Harbour Crossing routes serving Kowloon East and New Territories East, and the terminus on Hong Kong Island of the long-established trunk routes serving the Hong Kong Island North Coast are all located at this bus terminus. These routes do not reach the area west of the terminus and mainly serve the area east of Central, which is conventionally referred to as "Central (Macau Ferry)" by the Government and the bus companies.
During the night time, the terminus becomes the terminus of overnight routes, and a number of whole-night N routes terminate there. Among them, the stops of routes N368 and N373 are located at a section of Connaught Road West outside the terminus, i.e., outside the "Macau Ferry Bus Terminus Public Toilet" (港澳碼頭巴士總站公廁 [Remark 5][Remark 6])[2]; during daytime, there is a public light bus terminus, a resident bus drop-off point and a franchised bus stopover, the latter of which is mainly for routes passing through the Western Harbour Crossing during peak hours.
As the boundary between Connaught Road West and Connaught Road Central is Morrison Street, the roadside stop is located on a section of the road west of the boundary line, and thus belongs to Connaught Road West, but the bus companies regard this stop as an intermediate stop om Connaught Road Central.
Opposite to the Macau Ferry Terminus is the Central Police Station, around which there are three residents' bus stops and a franchised bus park. For details, please refer to the articles "Chung King Road", "Water Front Police Station" and "Macau Ferry Terminal Car Park".
History[]
On 1 January 1960, the Cleverly Street Bus Terminus opened at Cleverly Street in the new reclamation area of Sheung Wan, between the present-day eastbound Connaught Road Central (including the bridge underpass and the pedestrian walkway), Cleverly Street and Hillier Street, and was regarded as the predecessor of the Macau Ferry Bus Terminus.
The Macau Ferry Bus Terminus was opened on 30 January 1981[3] at the site of the Gala Point in Sheung Wan, known as the "civilian nightclub", opposite the temporary Macau Ferry Terminal, where the Central Police Station is now located, with the lay-bys running in a south-north direction, with the front of the buses facing west on Connaught Road when they are stopping [4]. According to the Gazette Notice of 12 January 1984, there are five lay-bys designated for the exclusive use of franchised buses.[5]
In the late 1980s, a new bus terminus was built to the east of the old Macau Ferry Bus terminus and opened on 1 April 1988[6] , i.e. the existing Macau fery Bus Terminus, with parallel single-row platforms and seven lay-bys, with buses stopping with their front ends to the west (later to the east). A new waterfront police station (now known as the Central Police Station) was subsequently built on the site of the old terminus.
After Citybus was granted the franchise for Route 12A in 1991, the terminus of the route was located at this stop. Due to insufficient number of lay-bys in the terminus, the Government opened a lay-by with an entrance at Chung Kong Road for buses of Route 12A, which is the lay-by of the current Cross-Harbour Bus Route 182. The lay-by was temporarily closed in late 2006 due to drainage works, and the northernmost lay-by was once converted into a construction site; the works were completed on 19 October 2008 and the lay-by was merged into another lay-by. [7]
Starting from 10:00 a.m. on 24 May 2000, the Government designated the waterfront area opposite the bus terminus as the "Macau Ferry Bus Terminus Extension" (港澳碼頭巴士總站附加部分)[8] for the parking of franchised buses. Two years later, on 14 June 2002, the Government demolished the Praya Police Quarters adjacent to the Praya Police Station to make way for the Macau Ferry Bus Terminus New Extension[9], where the car park was relocated to the Macau Ferry Parking Site (港澳碼頭車場, MFD) known by Citybus and NWFB.
The old car park site was converted into a second-generation "Gala Point"[10], which opened in September 2002[11][12]. However, the public response was far from satisfactory and the night bazaar was no longer in its former glory. The night bazaar was officially closed on 1 February 2004, and the Government constructed a stormwater pumping station and the Central and Western Waterfront Promenade - Sheung Wan Section[13] in 2006 at the same location. The $200 million Sheung Wan Stormwater Pumping Station was commissioned in March 2009 [14][15].
In view of the persistent shortage of Grade A office sites in the CBD, the Government included the bus terminus site known as the "Chung Kong Road site" in the Application List in 2008 for the construction of a commercial building with an indoor bus terminus. Subsequently, the site was temporarily removed from the Application List in March 2009 in response to the Central and Western District Council's objection to the high development density. After several rounds of review by the Planning Department to reduce the development scale, the site was re-added to the Application List for triggering by real estate developers for public auction [16]. The bus terminus had to be temporarily relocated to a temporary bus terminus converted from the car park of the Macau Ferry Terminal during the construction works of the future commercial building.
