Castle Peak Road - Yuen Long (青山公路-元朗段), also known as Yuen Long Main Road (元朗大馬路), runs from Au Tau in the east to Yuen Long Police Station in the west, cutting through the centre of Yuen Long Town, which is one of the sections of Castle Peak Road, with the Ping Shan section to its west and the Tam Mi section to its north.
History[]
The section of Castle Peak Road between Fung Cheung Road and Yuen Long Police Station constitutes the most principal thoroughfare in Yuen Long town, hence locally known as ‘Yuen Long Main Road’. On 15 February 1935, the government designated this section as "Yuen Long Main Road" (元朗大路).[1] In 1968, Castle Peak Road was subdivided, and authorities aligned this section with other segments of Castle Peak Road, designating it as Castle Peak Road – Yuen Long[2], but residents continued to refer to it as Yuen Long Main Road.
The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation's implementation of the Light Rail Transit project in 1984 brought significant alterations to the section crossing Castle Peak Road in Yuen Long Town Centre. These included the reconstruction of the roundabouts at Yuen Long Police Station and Fung Cheung Road, alongside the relocation of the Yuen Long East Bus Terminus to its present site on Long Lok Road, resulting in the current configuration.
Structure[]
The Yuen Long section runs predominantly east-west, separated by the Light Rail tracks between Yuen Long Police Station (at the intersection of Ma Miu Road and Yuen Long Tai Yuk Road) and the junction with On Lok Road. The stretch from Yuen Long On Lok Road to Au Tau Interchange lacks Light Rail tracks but features two interchanges: the Pok Oi Interchange connecting to Yuen Long Highway, and the "Au Tau Interchange" connecting the Tam Mi section and Kam Tin Road.
The Yuen Long section is divided by the Light Rail tracks at the intersection with Yuen Long On Lok Road. Eastbound vehicles must travel via Long Yat Road, rejoining Castle Peak Road opposite YOHO Midtown. Additionally, a flyover connects the Yuen Long section with Yuen Long On Lok Road/Long Yip Street. KMB Route 69 (Tin Shui Wai direction, eastbound), KMB Route 276C (Tin Shui Wai direction, westbound), MTR Bus Route K74 (Tin Shui Wai direction, westbound), and LWB routes E36A and E36C (Yuen Long direction, westbound) utilise this route for their journeys.
