Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan (青山公路 – 荃灣段) is one of the sections of Castle Peak Road, which starts from Castle Peak Road - Kwai Chung section near Tai Wo Hau Station footbridge in the east, and extends to Greenview Terrace at Yau Kom Tau in the west, intersecting with Ting Kau section; the section between Lai Chi Road and Hoi Hing Road roundabout and between Po Fung Road and Ting Kau section are one-way eastbound, while the remaining sections are two-way.

The section between Tuen Mun Road and Cheung Pei Shan Road, i.e. the section near Tsuen King Circuit Flyover bus stop, forms part of Route 9.

When KMB assigns numbers to all bus stops, the prefixes of the stops along Castle Peak Road are CA07.

History[]

Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan is one of the sections of Castle Peak Road, which was already the backbone of Tsuen Wan when it was opened to traffic, and Nan Fung Textiles, which played a part in Hong Kong's industrial development, had set up a yarn factory along the route[1]. In 1982, the MTR Tsuen Wan Line was opened to traffic, and the Tsuen Wan MTR Station Bus Terminus, which is situated underneath the Nan Fung Centre, has become one of the busiest bus termini in the Tsuen Wan area. Before the commissioning of Tsuen Wan Road in the mid-1980s, the Tsuen Wan section was the only link between New Territories West and the urban area.

The west side of the road was a residential area, with Belvedere Garden and other housing estates standing around Tsuen Wan West. The section was affected by Belvedere Garden and was one of the few sections of the southern part of Castle Peak Road that was not widened, so the Hong Kong Government built a wider parallel road along the waterfront, named Hoi On Road. At that time, vehicles travelling westbound to Ting Kau could not go directly through Castle Peak Road and had to detour westbound via Lai Shun Road and Hoi On Road; Subsequently, the Hong Kong Government also changed the section of Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan between Lai Chi Road and Hoi Hing Road to one-way eastbound, so that westbound vehicles travelling from Chai Wan Kok to Belvedere Garden and Bayview Garden would have to make a detour via Hoi Hing Road, Hoi On Road and Lai Chi Road/Lai Shun Road before they could turn back to the section of Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan, and it is more convenient for vehicles travelling from Tsuen Wan town centre to Ting Kau and Sham Tseng to take Hoi On Road westbound.

Today, the section of Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan near Tsuen Wan Town Centre, Tsuen Wan Station and Chai Wan Kok Industrial Area is still busy with traffic, with many passengers waiting for buses at the bus stops along the road.

Usage situation[]

At present, public transport using the Tsuen Wan section mainly uses the city centre section, compared to the Tsuen Wan westbound section; the latter is affected by the historical section, and there are obviously more eastbound franchised bus routes than westbound bus routes, and because the Tsuen Wan section off Ting Kau section is very narrow and not suitable for buses to turn around, bus routes from Ting Kau section to the westbound direction would first detour via Hoi On Road and Lai Shun Road before entering the Tsuen Wan section, but minibuses would directly turn into the Tsuen Wan section from Ting Kau section; westbound buses are mainly used by routes terminating at Bayview Garden, but similar LWB Airbus Routes ("A routes") tend to go straight to the whole section of Hoi On Road. Westbound buses are mainly used by routes terminating at Bayview Garden, and most of the bus routes heading towards Ting Kau run directly along Hoi On Road in its entirety. However, the similar LWB Route A38 and various minibus routes purposely pass through the westbound section of Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan between Lai Chi Road and Lai Shun Road, which is more convenient for residents of different phases of Belvedere Garden.

The Tsuen Wan factories of the Nan Fung Group have all been demolished in recent years, and the sites have been handed over to its subsidiary, Nan Fung Development, for the construction of residential or commercial buildings, including Summit Terrace, Kam Fung Garden, and Nan Fung Centre, amongst others.
