Castle Peak Road (青山公路 for New Territories sections, 青山道 for Kowloon section) is the longest highway in Hong Kong with a total length of 56 kilometres. Starting from the Kowloon section in Sham Shui Po, it passes through Kwai Chung, Tsuen Wan, Ting Kau, Sham Tseng, Tai Lam, Siu Lam, Tuen Mun, Lam Tei, Hung Shui Kiu, Yuen Long, Mai Po, Lok Ma Chau, Kwu Tung and Sheung Shui, and it is the second highway in Hong Kong to be constructed, which was opened to traffic one after another in the 1910's, and it has completed more than a century of history.
Castle Peak Road is prefixed with the number CA07 at all KMB stops along the route. Castle Peak Road is also the main route for red minibuses travelling to and from the urban areas in Tsuen Wan, Tuen Mun and Yuen Long.
History[]
When Castle Peak Road was first opened in the 1910s, the distance between individual buildings and the Tsim Sha Tsui (Star Ferry) was originally marked by miles, such as "13 miles on Castle Peak Road" for Anglers' Beach and "18¾ miles on Castle Peak Road" for Old Cafeteria Beach.
In the past, when the road network in New Territories West was not well developed, Castle Peak Road was the essential route between New Territories West and Kowloon. From the 1960s onwards, a number of trunk roads such as Kwai Chung Road, Tuen Mun Road, Yuen Long Highway, San Tin Highway, etc. were completed one after another, and the importance of Castle Peak Road declined year by year due to the more direct routes of these new trunk roads, and in 1968, Castle Peak Road was subdivided into a number of sections.
However, most sections of Castle Peak Road are served by various bus routes, which provide passengers with scenic views of the rural areas of the western New Territories. In addition, as public light buses cannot access Tuen Mun Road, Yuen Long Highway, San Tin Highway and Fanling Highway, which are expressways, Castle Peak Road has become an essential route for public light buses travelling between Tuen Mun, Yuen Long and Sheung Shui.
The Government started to assess the traffic flow of Castle Peak Road in 1994 and has been carrying out widening works in two phases since 2001. The first phase of the road section from Tsuen Wan West (Belvedere Garden) in Tsuen Wan to Ka Loon Tsuen (Tsing Lung Tau) was funded in 2001 and completed in mid-2006, while the second phase of the road section from Ka Loon Tsuen to Siu Lam was funded in 2004 and completed in mid-2007.
