Caine Road (堅道) is one of the main roads in Mid-Levels in the Central and Western District. Its western end connects to Bonham Road at its junction with Hospital Road and Seymour Road, and its eastern end connects to Upper Albert Road at its junction with Arbuthnot Road and Glenealy.

History[]

Caine Road was opened to traffic around the 1840s and was named after Hong Kong's first magistrate, William Caine.

Caine Road is the dividing road between the old-style western-style houses and the high-end residential areas in Mid-Levels. However, the general public does not regard the eastbound road of Caine Road as part of Sheung Wan; instead, it is regarded as part of Mid-Levels.

Situation of Use[]

In order to encourage residents in Mid-Levels to switch to taking buses, so that buses can quickly take passengers to Central Mid-Levels and Southern District via Caine Road, and to reduce the traffic congestion on Caine Road caused by the flow of private vehicles, the British Hong Kong Government implemented the bus-only lane policy on 16 April 1974 on the entire westbound section of Caine Road. From 07:00-19:00 on Mondays to Saturdays, buses, private light buses and those with valid permits were excluded. For vehicles with certificates must go westbound via Robinson Road, then go westbound along Park Road and Bonham Road eastbound Go northbound on Acropolis Road and turn back eastbound on Caine Road for travelling from Cotton Tree Drive to Caine Road.

Since then, this Mid-Levels Bus Priority Scheme has been maintained until now. The authorities relaxed the restricted hours on Saturdays to 07:00-13:00 on 15 September 2001. Many franchised bus routes passing through the Mid-Levels only go westbound via Caine Road, while eastbound routes mainly take Robinson Road, and some routes also run via Castle Road then turning right to a small section of Caine Road; many Pok Fu Lam Road Green Minibus (GMB) routes to and from the north shore of Hong Kong Island pass through Caine Road on their return journey, and some eastbound routes pass through Old Bailey Street to Hollywood Road before arriving at Central.
