AlipayHK (支付寶香港) is an e-purse service and third-party payment platform for Hong Kong launched in May 2017 under Alipay's parent company, China's online financial group "Ant Gold Services". Hong Kong's Cheung Kong & Hutchison Industries and Alipay's parent company, China Internet financial group "Ant Gold Service", formed a strategic partnership alliance in September 2017, injecting nearly $600 million to vigorously develop AlipayHK's business, and formally established a joint venture, Alipay Financial Services (HK) Ltd, in March 2018, with each party holding a 50/50 interest. [1]

AlipayHK has been granted a Stored Value Payment Instrument Licence (SVF0004) by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority as early as 25 August 2016, and after more than two years of preparation, in October 2018, it announced the launch of a payment technology that can be applied to transportation - EasyGo ( 易乘碼), and signed a partnership agreement with two major green minibus operators in Hong Kong, AMS Public Transport and Koon Wing Motors, a subsidiary of "King of Minibus" Ma Ah Muk, which allows members of the public to use electronic wallets to pay for their rides on some minibus routes. [2]

Passengers can pay the fare by scanning the QR code generated from the "EPS" interface in the AlipayHK mobile app to the reader on the bus or minibus. The entire transaction can be completed in 0.3 to 0.4 seconds on average, and after a successful transaction, a "beep" will sound (or "thank you/success" in Chinese will be read out on city buses), and the user will receive an SMS alert[3].

"Easy Ride" uses dual offline technology, which allows users to pay for fares even if their cell phone does not have network coverage; if the balance in the electronic wallet is insufficient, the wallet can advance one fare until the user adds value to the wallet. [4]

Ma Ah Muk[]

From 14 December 2019, Route 47 operated by Brilliant Way under Ma Ah Muk accepted Alipay HK "EasyGo" Ride Code for payment, which was the first among Kowloon. [10]Compared to AMS Public Transport, the pace of introducing EasyGo by Ma Ah Muk was relatively slower, and only after 9 months that EasyGo for payment was only accepted on routes operated under Sky Team Transportation (Kowloon GMB Routes 76A and 76B) and Treasure Up (New Territories GMB Route 113).[11][12]

And after 2020 onwards, routes operated by Koon Wing Motors, Garrison, Yan Yan Ho under Ma Ah Muk began to accept EasyGo payment. However as most passengers accustomed to pay their fares with Octopus and passengers seldom use EasyGo for payment, some GMBs even do not launch the system concerned.

Other GMB operators[]

All routes operated under Fine Luck (Kowloon GMB Routes 17M, 25A, 25B, 25M and 25MS) accept payment by Alipay HK "EasyGo". [25]

Franchised bus companies[]

After the introduction of EasyGo ride code, a number of franchised bus companies are interested in introducing electronic payment technologies other than Octopus. NWFB and Citybus indicated that they had conducted pre-qualification for the introduction of e-payment in 2018 and nine operators had expressed interest. It is expected that formal tenders would be invited within 2019, and both QR Code and Near Field Communication (NFC) technologies would be considered, but there is no specific implementation timetable.

KMB and LWB pointed out that they had studied and prepared for the introduction of a new electronic payment system to provide passengers with more choices in addition to cash and Octopus cards [26]. As a result, LWB announced in March 2020 that seven routes were the first to introduce AlipayHK payment on 15 March. [27] Starting from 24 May, all LWB routes accepted AlipayHK payment.[28] On 7 February 2021, KMB launched the same e-payment system as LWB on 39 routes, named "e-payment system", which also supports AlipayHK payment[29]. The number of applicable routes would be gradually increased by phases, and finally on 13 February 2022, all routes were announced to support the "e-payment system", including AlipayHK. [30]

Starting from 9 January 2021, NWFB and Citybus would be the first to introduce the use of Transportation 2D Codes (including AlipayHK's "EasyGo", BocPay "RideCode", UnionPay's "QuickPass") for payment on nine of its routes, including Citybus routes 20, 20A, A29, A29P and E21A, as well as NWFB routes 23, 694, 796C and 798, and wouldl also be the first to introduce the use of the e-payment system for payment on all its routes. [31][32] On 26 April 2021, Citybus introduced four cross-harbour routes (686, 933, 976, 989), all of which accept Transport 2D payment, while all other franchised routes started to accept Transport 2D payment on 9 May of the same year. [33]

NLB first introducede AlipayHK EasyGo Payment Codes for payment on six routes starting from 29 November 2021, including Routes 21, 23, 37H, B2, B2P and B6 [34]. All remaining franchised routes (except the 6 special routes) accepted Transport QR Code payment from 15 February 2022. [35]

Compatibiity with related transport interchange concessions[]

Currently, AlipayHK EasyGo users can enjoy interchange concessions/fare concessions for journeys paid in the same way (only applicable to franchised bus operators of the same company / group, not applicable to minibuses). However, the fare system has not yet been included in the Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme and the Public Transport Fare Concession Scheme for the Elderly and Eligible Persons with Disabilities (the "$2 Concessionary Fare Scheme").[36]
