The North Lantau Shuttle Bus Route S1 is jointly operated by Citybus and Long Win Bus (LWB). It runs between Tung Chung Station and the Airport (Passenger Terminal Building) on a circular basis, passing through the CAD Headquarters and the AsiaWorld-Expo.

This route is the main route between the Passenger Terminal Building of Hong Kong International Airport, AsiaWorld-Expo and MTR Tung Chung Station. Many passengers travelling between the City and the Airport will use this route to connect to the Tung Chung Line, which is considered to be the most economical alternative to the Airport Bus Routes and the MTR Airport Express. It is the route with the lowest fare in Hong Kong and the first full-day non-cross-harbour jointly-operated bus route in Hong Kong.

Joint-operation Arrangements[]

This is the first non-cross-harbour whole-day jointly-operated route in Hong Kong's history (the first non-cross-harbour joint route was the cancelled Route 81P, which was not a full-time service) and there are only three such routes in operation (the other two being R8 and the unconventional X1).

In terms of stop signages, Citybus and LWB have their own numbering on most of the stops along the route, unlike the usual joint routes where only one of the stop signs lists the numbering of each stop. However, at the beginning, the Tung Chung MTR Station Bus Terminus (now known as Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus), the Asiaworld-Expo and the CAD Headquarters stops only had Citybus stop signs, with the Tung Chung MTR Station Bus Terminus stop signs also bearing the LWB logo and a different layout from the usual Citybus terminus sign. At that time, LWB Route N42A already shared a stop with this route, and the company had also set up a stop sign for this route. In around 2014, Citybus replaced the Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus stop sign for this route with a generic intermediate station design and no longer carried the LWB logo. In November 2014, LWB removed the numbering of this route from its own stop sign at Cheong Tat Road "Car Park 1" stop, which was later reapplied when the stop sign was replaced with a stop flag. On 22 January 2017, as routes S52 and S52P no longer stopped at "Tung Chung Cable Car Terminal" bus stop, Citybus removed the route numbers of these two routes from the stop signs. Subsequently, LWB reorganised the "Tung Chung Cable Car Terminal" stop sign and the numbering of route S1 was removed while the Route Sheet Plate was retained. On 4 January 2021, some trips of Routes A26 and A26P added a stop at stop at the Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel stop (formerly the SkyPier stop) and Citybus added these route numbers to the stop sign there. In summary, except for the "CAD Headquarters" and "Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus" where only Citybus has this route number on the bus stop sign, all other bus stops and termini have this route number on their respective bus stop signs.

Ridership[]

This route provides a quicker route between Tung Chung Station and the Airport (Passenger Terminal Building);[Remark 1] it is also the only whole-day public transport service that passes through the Airport's East Commercial Area, and the fares for passengers using this route to interchange with the MTR Tung Chung Line are much cheaper than those of the Airport Bus Routes (A Routes) and the Airport Express. This route is also recommended by some overseas guidebooks and maps, which has attracted many travellers to use this route and has led to an increase in ridership.

Related Incidents[]

  • 19 June 2001: In the morning, an Airport-bound LWB Dennis Lance was hit head-on by a Dennis Trident (187/HT7230) on Route E32 at the Cheong Tat Road roundabout, and a MAN A53 (HKR137/JM6146) on DBTSL Route DB02R crashed into the right side of the vehicle. The incident resulted in 12 people being injured, with two other vehicle drivers in serious condition.[25][26]
