Airport Logistics Area (機場後勤區) is located within the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) on Chek Lap Kok Island in the Islands District, generally refers to the area south of the airport's south runway (07R/25L), and was opened on 22 June 1998 under the jurisdiction of the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK).
Overview[]
In the 1980s, the traffic at the old Kai Tak Airport began to reach saturation. To cope with the growing demand for air traffic, the Hong Kong Government announced in 1989 the construction of an international airport at Chek Lap Kok, and started preparations for its construction in 1990.
After years of construction, the Hong Kong International Airport officially opened on 6 July 1998 and the Logistics Area commenced operation earlier on 22 June, providing a full range of aviation support services such as aviation fuel, aviation catering, cargo, aircraft maintenance, commercial aviation and ground support equipment maintenance. The airport logistics area can be divided into Catering Area (航空膳食區), Cargo Area (貨運區), Business Aviation Area (商用航空區), Aircraft Maintenance Area (飛機維修區) and East Commercial District (東商業區) according to their functions.
To ensure optimal utilisation of land resources and to achieve economies of scale in airport ancillary and related cargo services, the Airport Authority has awarded most of the air logistics operations to specific service providers under franchise. The concession contracts for the two air cargo terminals handling general air cargo, i.e. SuperTerminal One and Asia Airfreight Terminal (AAT), were awarded with a concession period of 20 years each, i.e. from 1998 to 2018. The AA works in partnership with the franchisee and regularly reviews the performance of the franchisee. The two air cargo terminals can handle a total of over 4 million tonnes of cargo per year.
In 2001, taking into account the difficulties faced by the aviation industry at that time, the AA proposed to all ground handling service operators a conditional extension of their operating rights and discussed the specific terms with individual operators on a case-by-case basis. In the end, AAT's franchise was extended to 30 years, expiring in 2028. The Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals (HACTL) currently maintains a 20-year concession period and pays an annual fee to the AA to retain the opportunity to extend the concession for another 10 years to 2028. [1]
In March 2008, AA awarded a 20-year non-exclusive franchise to Cathay Pacific Services Limited to design, build and operate the 10-hectare cargo terminal with an annual throughput of about 2.6 million tonnes [2]. The new terminal will increase the airport's total general and express cargo throughput to 7.4 million tonnes per annum, helping to strengthen HKIA's position as a global air cargo hub.
Major areas and bus services[]
Catering Area[]
It refers to the three catering manufacturing workshops for flights south of the eastern end of South Runway, i.e. the area around the Catering Road East and Catering Road West; they are Cathay Dining, LSG Sky Chefs and Gate Gourmet Catering. Airport Police Station, Chek Lap Kok South Fire Station and Air Mail Centre are also located within the Catering Area.
LWB Route S64 series (except Route S64X) passes through both Catering Road East and Catering Road West, but each of the North Lantau External Routes will only pass through one of them, among which all the North Lantau External Routes operated by LWB serving the Airport pass through Catering Road West only.
Cargo Area[]
The Airport Cargo Area refers to the area south of the runway, Chun Wan Road and Scenic Road, including Asia Airfreight Terminal (AAT), Airport Freight Forwarding Centre, Cathay Pacific Cargo Terminal, SuperTerminal One, Tradeport Logistics Centre and Cathay Pacific City, etc.
The stops "Asia Airfreight Terminal" and "HACTL" are the circular point of Citybus Route S52P and the afternoon trip origin of LWB Route S64C respectively, whereas the stop "Chun Wan Road South" is the circular return points of Routes S64C and S64P; besides multiple North Lantau External Routes also observe Cargo Area. The area where most of the External Routes observe is the Cathay Pacific City, with most North Lantau External Routes serving the Airport and small amounts of special trips of Cityflyer and LWB Airbus Routes observe there. All LWB Overnight Airbus Routes observe Cathay Pacific City, among which those observing Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel terminate there.
Business Aviation Area and Aircraft Maintenance Area[]
The Hong Kong Business Aviation Centre (HKBCAC) and the Government Flying Service (GFS) Headquarters, located to the south-west of the south runway, form part of the Business Aviation Area (BAA), while the Aircraft Maintenance Area (AMA) is located within the Airport Restricted Area (ARA) on the west bank of Chek Lap Kok, where airlines carry out maintenance and repair of their aircraft. Both are connected to the rest of the Logistics Area by the South Perimeter Road. Citybus routes E21C, E22C, S52, S52A and LWB routes E37C and E42C all terminate at the Aircraft Maintenance Area.
East Commercial Area[]
CAD Headquarters, Cathay House and CNAC House are all located on the east of Chek Lap Kok. They are separated from other parts of the Logistics Area and can be accessed via Tung Fai Road. Currently, only Airport Shuttle Bus Route S1 observes the area for the whole day, and the special trips of Citybus Route A12, LWB Routes A36 and A41, as well as Citybus Routes E22P and E22X also observe there.
