The Ground Transportation Centre Bus Terminus (地面運輸中心巴士總站, Citybus Location Code GTC)[1] is located on the ground floor of the Hong Kong International Airport Ground Transportation Centre at 23 Cheong Tat Road, Chek Lap Kok, New Territories, between Passenger Terminal 1 and Passenger Terminal 2, with two sets of open-air enclosed sawtooth-shaped bus termini.
As the hub of the Airport's franchised bus services, 42 bus routes terminate at the Ground Transportation Centre, including regular airport bus routes ("A" routes), North Lantau external routes ("E" routes) and North Lantau external overnight routes ("N" routes) to and from all major areas in Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories, the largest number of bus termini in Hong Kong. There are also 29 "E", "N" and "NA" routes from SKYCITY, Cathay Pacific City, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge or Tung Chung Station to Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories, making a total of 68 routes using this station. Among the "A" routes, only the intermediate stop of the NLB Route A35 and its overnight counterpart N35 are located outside Terminal 1 opposite this stop, while all other routes, except LWB Route N30, are available at the Ground Transportation Centre.
The Ground Transportation Centre (GTC) is part of the Passenger Terminal Building[2] and offers a wide range of facilities that allow visitors to travel to the city by various modes of transport, including the MTR Airport Express Airport Station, taxi stands and bus stops on all levels of the GTC.
Citybus Dynamic Bus Stop Display Panel shows the name of this stop as "Airport". In addition, when the stop reporters of the Cityflyer buses announces this stop, the stop name "Airport (Ground Transportation Centre)" is displayed and played first, as well as "Passengers for SKYCITY and AsiaWorld-Expo, please cross over the road at the pedestrian crossing to take routes E11, E11A, E21, E21D, E22 or E22A at the bus stop on the right" (For Chinese: 「前往航天城及亞洲國際博覽館,請步行到斑馬線,過馬路後,在右邊的巴士站,轉乘路線E11、E11A、E21、E21D、E22或E22A」).[Remark 1][Remark 2]
When the LWB stop reporter displays this stop, it only displays "Ground Transportation Centre" because there is not enough space on the stop reporter screen to display the entire stop name.
History[]
- The main article of this section is Hong Kong International Airport#The New Airport opens.
The Ground Transportation Centre (GTC) at 23 Cheong Tat Road was first opened on 22 June 1998 to coincide with the opening of the Airport Logistics Area to serve the Airport Staff.[3]
The four-storey Ground Transportation Centre is a 55,000-square-metre building costing HK$1.76 billion to build. The ground floor has a taxi stand, a coach stand and a franchised bus terminus, collectively known as the Arrivals ground level transport facilities, which initially had 17 loading bays and a central waiting area for 16 buses. The first and second levels are the arrival level platform and departure level platform of the Airport Express respectively. The highest level, known as the Departures Kerb (「離港層停車路緣」), is located on the Cheong Hong Road, where departing passengers can alight at the main entrance of the Terminal Building[4] and proceed to the Passenger Registration Hall (departures level) via a number of ramps which feature moving walkways.[5]
At the beginning of the airport's operation, Long Win Bus (LWB) had a ticketing office at the Ground Transportation Centre[6] and a customer service counter at the arrival level of the Passenger Terminal Building[4], just like Citybus, but the appearance of the counter was similar to that of the nearby hotel and travel agency counters, making it difficult for passengers to identify them. At present, both Citybus and LWB have Customer Service Centres and Ticketing Offices at the Ground Transportation Centre, with LW's existing Customer Service Centre opened in February 2004.[7]
The GTC bus terminus is wholly owned and managed by the Airport Authority of Hong Kong (AAHK), and bus companies are required to seek prior approval from AAHK for any additional equipment to be installed in the bus terminus[8]. In October 2005, LW took the liberty of painting a red line on the roadside next to the Route A31 berth, requiring bus captains to park their buses behind the red line, freeing up part of the original berth for the parking of patrol vehicles. The company issued an internal circular stating that if bus captains did not park their buses behind the red line, they would be subject to disciplinary action. The AA followed up and reminded LW that they should not add or change any signs on the road without the consent of the AA, and that drivers should park their vehicles in accordance with the designated parking spaces.[9]
Following the opening of the coach terminal at Terminal 2, the Airport Authority converted the old coach pick-up/drop-off area to the east of the terminal into a new wing of the bus terminus; the new wing was opened on 29 July 2011 and the four LWB North Lantau external routes were relocated there from the first bus on that day. [10]
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, which was eagerly awaited by the residents of Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong, was opened on 24 October 2018. The HKBCF and Public Transport Interchange (PTI) on the artificial island adjacent to the northeast corner of the Airport Island was also put into operation at the same time, and all Overnight Airbus Routes (NA routes), which used to terminate at the Ground Transportation Centre, were extended to this location, maintaining this stop as the urban/NT bound mid-way stop.

Terminus Layout and Facilities[]
The bus stops in the Ground Transportation Centre comprises of two sets of enclosed, sawtooth-shaped bus termini. The one near Terminal 1 and Cheong Tat Road, which was opened in 1998 when the airport was completed, has eight and eleven stops on the east and west edges and is shared by Citybus and LWB. The extension to the east of this group, near Terminal 2, was completed in 2011 and has six stops, all of which are used by LWB.
The Citybus Customer Service Centre and the Long Win Bus Customer Service and Ticketing Office are located next to the pedestrian walkway leading to the entrance of the Terminal Building. In addition to the general route enquiry services, passengers can also purchase advanced tickets for each of the two bus companies' Airbus Routes ("A" routes). The Regulator's Room and Staff Lounge of the two bus companies are also located there.
Passengers arriving at the Ground Level of the Ground Transportation Centre from the arrival level of the Terminal Building along the slow ramp can check the service areas, timetables and fares of each route via the Airport Authority's Passenger Signage, which is located in front of the Bus Terminus and has a Bus Information Display Panel.
Please note that the stop may be temporarily or permanently altered at any time due to other factors (e.g. road works).
