AMS Public Transport Holdings Limited (進智公共交通控股有限公司), abbreviated name "AMS" or "AMS Transport" (進智公交), is one of Hong Kong's better managed green minibus operators and the only listed Public Light Bus company with a network of routes spanning from Hong Kong Island to Kwai Tsing District, Tsuen Wan District, Shatin District, Tai Po District, North District in the New Territories, and is also involved in resident bus operations. It is the second largest GMB operator in Hong Kong, after Ma Ah Muk.
The company is headquartered at 11-12/F, Lee Kwan Commercial Building, 223 Aberdeen Main Road, Aberdeen, Southern District, Hong Kong, with its hotline number 2873 6808.
History[]
Wong Man-kit (1941-2017), a former elected member of the Aberdeen constituency of the Southern District, bought his first minibus in 1969, initially focusing on the Red Minibus business. When the government institutionalised the Green Minibuses (then known as luxury minibuses) in 1974, Wong set up Aberdeen Maxicab Service Company Ltd (AMS)[2] and applied to the Transport Department for a GMB service in the Southern District in the following year, converting several of his red minibuses into GMBs. Both routes 4 and 5 were officially launched on 3 July, running between Central and Causeway Bay and Aberdeen respectively, making them the second GMB operator in Hong Kong after the Ah Yuen Super Light Bus Company (亞袁豪華小型巴士公司).
The first 24-hour GMB route was introduced in February 1980 when Route 5 was introduced as an overnight service. The Aberdeen Tunnel was opened on 15 March 1982 and the second generation of Route 4, which ran via Nam Fung Road and Wong Nai Chung Gap Road, was diverted to the Aberdeen Tunnel and upgraded to 24-hour service in the same year. The year 1983 saw the completion of the installation of air-conditioning on the entire Aberdeen GMB fleet, marking the first in the industry. In 1988, the number of seats on the fleet was increased to 16, in line with the Government's legislative amendment in 1988.
Massive Expansion[]
In the 1990s, AMS expanded their service areas by actively tendering for new routes throughout Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories that were no longer confined to the Southern District. New routes introduced during this period included:
- Shing Mun Tunnel Express Route 481 and 482 between Shatin District and Tsuen Wan District in December 1990, known as the "Shing Mun Tunnel Express", which were the company's first two routes serving outside the Hong Kong Island.
- The introduction of the Central and Western District route 42 in December 1991 and the Wan Chai District route 41M in March 1992, both of which were subsequently cancelled.
- Central and Western District routes 45 and 46 were introduced in October 1992, with Route 46 being the first cross-harbour route in its name, and Route 45A was introduced in 1994, both routes 45 and 46 were subsequently cancelled.
- The first Shing Mun Tunnel Express , 403, between Shatin and Kwai Tsing in November 1992 was commenced under the name of Kit Kee Transportation, and in October 1995 for Route 403A.
- Two Kowloon routes 43 and 43A were operated between 1994 and 1995 under the name of Sunning Transportation, both of which were subsequently cancelled.
- Between 1995 and 1996, four Hong Kong Island routes were introduced, including routes 56 and 57M by Kit Kee Transport, and routes 58 and 59 by Sunning Transportation. 57M was replaced by Residents' Bus Route 63R in 1998, which was later cancelled.
In November 1999, the company was the first to introduce the Octopus payment system on GMBs. In July 2000, it further expanded its GMB route network in the Southern District by acquiring Route 52 from another operator and in November 2000, it acquired the operating rights of three routes, namely 51, 51A and 51S, from Superlong Limited. In the middle of the same year, AMS participated in the Alternative Fuel Minibus Trial Scheme, introducing four LPG Toyota Coasters and two electric Vicmax Zen minibuses to routes 4C, 5, 58, 59 and 481.[3]
Moving into the millennium, the company collaborated with RoadShow in 2001 to install CD-ROMs and TVs in the minibuses to broadcast multimedia information programmes. In the same year, the company acquired Tai Po Maxicab Company Limited[4] and took over and substantially reorganised 8 of the latter's routes, leading to an increase in patronage, and in 2002, the company was awarded the right to operate Cyberport Route 69, which was officially launched on 29 January 2003 with a luxurious version of the Toyota Coaster EX (5EL) minibus in coach Bus configuration, which was the first among the industry.
After Listing on the HKSE[]
In 2004, Aberdeen Maxicab was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under the name "AMS Transport" with the stock code 0077, making it the first listed GMB operator in Hong Kong (hence the number "77" on the licence plates of many of its minibuses). Following the listing, the company has revamped its corporate image by setting up an official website[5] and displaying its logo and website sticker on all its GMBs.
Entering Cross-border Businesses without success[]
In 2006, the company entered the cross-border passenger transport business by acquiring an 80% stake in China Link Group Limited. In early 2007, 40 Mitsubishi Rosas with Euro IV engines were ordered and 32 more were ordered by the end of the year, setting a precedent for the industry in terms of high emission standards.
After the opening of the MTR Lok Ma Chau Spur Line in August 2007, revenue from the China-Hong Kong Express between Tsuen Wan and Huanggang Port continued to decline, resulting in declining profits for the China Link Group and a contraction in net profit;[6] on 27 April 2011, AMS decided to sell its entire shareholding in China Link Group Limited to Trans-Island Travel, a subsidiary of the Kwoon Chung Motors Group, for $300 million, so that it could focus on its green minibus business.[7]
Actively expanding its scale by acquiring other operators[]
In 2011, AMS actively expanded its business by acquiring other GMB operators. First, on 18 February, it announced the full acquisition of #Hong Kong Maxicab, the operator of four routes on Hong Kong Island - 10, 10X, 11 and 31 - for HK$32 million from Ma Ah Muk; upon completion of the transaction, Hong Kong Green Minibus Company and the four routes became part of AMS.[8] Gurnard Holdings Ltd, a subsidiary of AMS, then acquired the entire shareholding of Central Maxicab Company Limited on 7 September at a consideration of $215 million[9] and the three Central GMB routes, Hong Kong Island Routes 54, 54S and 55, have since been transferred to AMS.
Less than two years after the completion of the acquisition of Hong Kong Maxicab Company Limited, due to the long-term loss and the hindrance of the route rationalisation plan, AMS announced on 20 January 2013 that it had proposed to the Transport Department (TD) to cease the operation of Hong Kong Island routes 10, 10X, 11 and 31 of the Hong Kong Maxicab.[10] Upon receipt of the notice, the Department had discussed with the company on a number of occasions to find alternative options in exchange for the continued provision of the service. TD replied on 6 February that it had no objection in principle to the revised route reorganisation plan, and on 18 February, AMS issued a statement withdrawing the service termination notice.[11] In the same month, route rationalisation was carried out, with route 10X being cancelled and replaced by new route 10S and Resident Bus Route HR88, and a supplementary express service to Route 10, Route 10P, was introduced.
In late 2012, AMS partnered with Motion Media to install TV sets in its minibus fleet, marking the second time that multimedia information programmes were broadcast on minibus cabins after the partnership with RoadShow in the early 2000s.[12][13]
Latest GMB models launched[]
In 2013, AMS received funding from the Government's Pilot Green Transport Fund to purchase eight GMI Gemini hybrid minibuses developed by GMI in Hong Kong, equipped with frames and chassis from Dongfeng Motors of China, electric motors from Siemens of Germany and lithium-iron phosphate batteries from Valence of the United States. The minibus was installed in Tuen Mun and has been in service progressively since November of the same year.[14]
On 1 July 2017, AMS and Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) collaborated for the first time to launch the KMB-AMS Interchange Discount Scheme, the first franchised bus-GMB Interchange Discount in Hong Kong.[15] for six months. Under the scheme, passengers who interchange from 45 GMB routes on Hong Kong Island to KMB's 24 solely operated daytime cross-harbour routes will receive $1.0 discount for using an adult Octopus and vice versa.[16]
The first batch of minibuses in Hong Kong to switch from 16-seater to 19-seater came into service on 9 August 2017, and one of them (UY3968) is owned by AMS, mainly serving the New Territories Route 20C.[17] 19-seater minibuses are converted from Toyota 16-seater 6.99m long formation vehicles, which are large enough to accommodate 3 additional seats and new armrests next to the headrests, at a conversion cost of about $20,000 per minibus.[18]
Three days later, Mr. Chan Man Chun, CEO of AMS, announced on 12 August that in line with the Government's Low-floor Minibus Trial Scheme, the Group had introduced a 19-seat Optare Solo SR low-floor minibus from the Optare depot in the UK at a cost of about $1.5 million, which was opened to the media, Legislative Council members and officials at 11am on 14 August. The minibus eventually came into service in January the following year, running on the Hospital Route 54M between Kennedy Town Station and Queen Mary Hospital.[19][20]
Founder and Honorary Chairman Wong Man Kit retired and resigned as an Executive Director of the Board on 29 August, 2017,[21] and later passed away at the age of 76 on 11 October of the same year due to illness.[22] [23]
More brand new services launched one by one[]
According to the 2018-2019 Interim Results Report of AMS, the management is seeking to introduce Estimated Arrival Time Enquiry Service and new payment channels on certain GMB routes. AMS has confirmed a partnership with Alipay Payment Services (HK) Limited (Alipay HK) to jointly offer passengers an innovative e-payment option, which is planned to be launched in the second half of the financial year.[24]
Starting from 28 January 2019, passengers of Hong Kong Island GMB Routes 8 and 8X will be able to pay their fares with Alipay HK EasyTrip Code. Subject to the initial success of the Alipay HK payment system and estimated arrival time service, AMS will consider full implementation on its GMB routes.
Then, from 14 April 2019, AMS accepted passengers to pay their fares with Alipay HK EasyTrip codes on 4A, 4B, 4C, 4M, 4S, 5, 5M, 35M, N4A, N4C and N4X.[25] On 5 May, 69, 69A, 69X and N69X also accepted Alipay HK EasyTrip codes for fare payment.[26] From 19 May, Alipay HK EasyRide Code was accepted on routes 403, 403A, 403P and 403X.[27] Starting from 2 June, Hong Kong Island routes 10, 10P, 31, 31X, 40, 40X and N40 will also accept fare payment with an EasyRide Code. From 22 December, fares will also be accepted on routes 52, 63 and 63A.[28]

Unlike other GMB operators with subsidiaries (e.g. Ma Ah Muk, Yau Man Investment, etc.), the following classification is based on the subsidiaries of the relevant routes.
The colours of the existing routes below reflect the colour scheme of the route on its signage, with white letters on a red background being a normal route and red letters on a yellow background being an express route, and those without matching colours do not have individual signs, but usually have their own Electronic Sign Displays.

Related Incidents[]
- 14 August 2019: At 7:31am, a five-vehicle collision occurred off Shing Mun Tunnel Road towards Sha Tin near Mei Chung Court, involving a container truck, a dump truck, a Toyota Coaster minibus (VE6997/7DL), a compact van and a taxi. A large number of firemen rushed to the scene and rescued the driver, while five passengers were injured. It is suspected that the taxi failed to stop and the front end of the taxi plunged into the rear of the dumper truck. The taxi driver was also injured and sent to hospital.[33] The minibus was later written off after the accident, becoming the first seventh generation Toyota Coaster to be retired. (Note: the decommissioning of the minibus was not eligible for funding from the Environmental Protection Department)
