Major events/incidents[]

  • 1979: The New Lantao Bus Villagers' Permit ceased to be used.
  • 1984: All new public light buses were required to install seat belts in the front seats.
  • 1997: Fireworks were launched at the Hong Kong Gold Coast in Tuen Mun at midnight. In order to divert the large number of passengers stranded at Tuen Mun Ferry Pier, KMB and KCR Bus operated some temporary routes, as detailed in the "Route introductions" section. As the Tuen Mun Ferry Pier area was overcrowded and some passengers walked to Yau Oi and the town centre, additional buses were deployed on KMB Route N60 to cope with the situation.
  • 2000: In the early hours of that day, the most extensive road closure during the festive period was implemented in Wan Chai and Causeway Bay (please refer to the Government's daily information bulletin for details of the arrangement), with Wan Chai (HKCEC Extension) and Wan Chai Ferry Pier areas serving as the locations for various festival bus routes to depart from. All bus stops in Causeway Bay were closed that night, and Citybus arranged the following bus routes to divert the crowds:[1]

  • 2016: Victoria Park and Causeway Bay to the east of it (including Tin Hau Station, Lai Tak Tsuen and Causeway Bay (Whitfield Road) Bus Terminus), which were formerly part of the Eastern District, were rezoned to Wan Chai District, which can be referenced to the District Council Constituency Boundary Map.[1]
  • 2019: The Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme was launched.
  • 2020: Passengers with personal medical needs are allowed to bring oxygen cylinders on franchised buses, with a limit of 2 oxygen cylinders per bus.
  • 2025: AlipayHK was added to the Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme as a designated payment tool.

Route introductions[]

  • 1994: Hong Kong Island GMB Route 52 entered service.
  • 1997: Temporary KMB Route N59 and KMB Route 52S were introduced to carry fireworks-goers from {Tuen Mun Pier Head and Gold Coast to Tsuen Wan MTR Station respectively. In addition, four temporary routes K62 (Tuen Mun Ferry Pier to Yuen Long (East)), K63 (Sam Shing to Yuen Long (East)), K72 (Tuen Mun Ferry Pier to Tin Shui Estate) and K73 (Sam Shing to Tin Shui Estate) were also operated by the KCRC to carry the public to Tin Shui Wai and Yuen Long districts.
  • 1998: KMB Route 869 entered service.
  • 2000:
    • NWFB Route 18S, Citybus routes 70S, 90S, Cross-Harbour Bus Routes 105R, 105S, 117S and 182S entered service, but service was provided for that single day only.
    • Citybus Route N25C and Cross-Harbour Bus Route 619S entered service.
  • 2001: KMB Route 289K entered service.
  • 2009: Citybus Route N5X entered service.
  • 2010: Citybus Route 5R entered service, but service was provided for that single afternoon only.
  • 2011: Residents' Bus Route HR85 entered service.
  • 2012: Citybus Route 780R entered service, but service was provided for that single day only.
  • 2013: Citybus Route 37R entered service.
  • 2015: Citybus Route 37S entered service.
  • 2019: LWB Route NA37 entered service.
  • 2022: NWFB routes 18R, 795R, Citybus Route 20S, KMB routes 59R, 65R, 67R, 70R, 216R, 225R, 236R, 239R, 241R, 246R, 272R, 287R and 298R entered service.
  • 2023: NWFB Route 4S and Cross-Harbour Bus Route 967N entered service.
  • 2024: KMB Route 78S entered service.
  • 2025: Citybus routes N20A and R11B entered service.

Route cancellations[]

  • 1960: The first generation CMB Route 5B ceased service.
  • 1996: The second generation Kowloon GMB Route 43 ceased service.
  • 2000: Citybus Route 626 ceased service.
  • 2001: New Territories GMB Route 408 ceased service.
  • 2002: KCR Bus Route 95R ceased service.
  • 2003: The first generation KMB Route B1 ceased service.
  • 2009: Kowloon GMB Route 46S ceased service.
  • 2015: Citybus Route 37R ceased service.
  • 2022: Kowloon GMB Route 15 ceased service.
  • 2024: Residents' Bus Route NR902 ceased service.
  • 2025: Residents' Bus Route NR750 ceased service.

Route changes[]

  • 1939: The terminus of CMB Route 1 was relocated from Eastern Street to Yaumatei Ferry Pier.
  • 1960: The Central terminus of CMB Route 1 was relocated to Cleverly Street to alleviate the congestion at Vehicular Ferry Pier Bus Terminus.
  • 1975: Multiple CMB routes in Southern District were renumbered:
    • Special service of Route 4 was renumbered as 40;
    • 7A was renumbered as 73;
    • The short-working service of Route 7A was renumbered as 74;
    • 7B was renumbered as 71;
    • 18 was renumbered as 78.
  • 1977: KMB Route 2E was extended from Shek Kip Mei to Pak Tin.
  • 1982: Kowloon GMB Route 5 was rerouted via Whampoa Estate, Cox's Road and Jordan Road.
  • 1986: CMB routes 82, 82A and 84 were rerouted via Chai Wan Road in lieu of Wah Ha Street and Lin Shing Road when leaving Chai Wan.
  • 1990: Buses on KCR Feeder Bus Route K15 was changed to be deployed entirely by KCRC and the route no longer detoured via Jordan Road Ferry at the same time.
  • 1992:
    • The termini of KMB routes 26, 81C, 206S and 281P was relocated from Tsim Sha Tsui East to Kowloon Station.
    • The termini of KMB Route 208 and Cross-Harbour Bus Route 110 was relocated from Tsim Sha Tsui East to Salisbury Road.
    • KMB routes 24X and 203 were converted to circular routes.
    • Kowloon GMB Route 7 was detoured via Science Museum Square.
  • 2007: New Territories GMB Route 807B was extended from Shui Long Wo to Wong Chuk Wan.
  • 2015: NWFB Route 15S was truncated to operate between The Peak and Admiralty Station (Queensway).
  • 2016:
    • New Monday to Saturday departure at 07:35 and Sunday and holiday departure at 07:40 on LWB Route S64X were introduced, which would operate via AsiaWorld-Expo and SkyPier after Regal Airport Hotel before proceeding directly to Cathay City and omit Catering Road East.
    • Services of New Territories GMB Route 27A from Pak Shek Kok (Providence Bay) during morning peak hours and from Sha Tin Station (Pai Tau Street) during evening peak hours were detoured via University Station.
  • 2017: NLB Route 37H was extended to Ying Tung Estate.
  • 2023:
    • Citybus Route 22X was rerouted via D3 Road (Metro Park section) and Shing Kai Road for both directions.
    • The terminus of New Territories GMB Route 621 was relocated from Tin Tan Street to inside Tin Shui Wai Hospital, and its new weekday morning special service directly heading to Hung Tin Road after departing from Hung Fuk Estate Hung Yuen Road was introduced.
  • 2024: New Territories GMB Route 611B was detoured via Shan Pui Road for Fau Tsoi Street direction.
